Do you enjoy eating chocolate? Maybe you wish you could have it every day. But have you ever wondered what would happen if you ate chocolate all day long, every day? Well, you’re right to think that it probably wouldn’t be good for you! Eating too much chocolate could make you feel sick and might cause cavities in your teeth. It’s interesting how something you love so much can also have a downside, isn’t it?
You know, eating healthy all the time can actually make you feel even better! So, what’s the secret? Fruits and vegetables! Do you enjoy all the vegetables your mum puts on your plate? When I was a kid, I only liked mashed potatoes—every other vegetable seemed gross! But not anymore. These days, I think most vegetables are pretty tasty, and I feel the same about fruit. If you had five dollars and could choose between buying some chocolate or some fresh fruit and vegetables, what would you pick?
In our First Reading today from Isaiah, God says we so often want things that aren’t good for us—that we even spend money for things that aren’t good for us. And not just like chocolate. Things that are sinful and things that really can’t help us. We waste our time—even money—on selfish things when we could be helping others, or on fun when we should be hearing or reading God’s Word. But someday those things won’t do us any good. Especially after we die.
God gives us the things that are good for us. He gives us Jesus, His Son, who died for us on the cross. Because Jesus died on the cross, God gives us forgiveness. He also gives us His Word so we know how good He is to us. And someday, He’ll even give us eternal life in heaven—where we’ll always be healthy, do only good things, and never die. And you know what? We don’t have to pay any money for those best things. Jesus already paid for them when He died on that cross. What Jesus gives—the best stuff!—we can enjoy all day, every day!
Dear God, thank You for all You have given me, but most of all, I thank You for giving me the free gift of eternal life because of the completed work of Your Son, Jesus, my Lord. Amen.
