St Johns Aubigny is a Lutheran congregation which has a church building, a church hall, and also has a church cemetery, with numerous graves dating back to the late 1800s.
Today, in 2026, St Johns Aubigny is faithfully served by Pastor Peter Ziebell, and is a member-congregation of the Australian Evangelical Lutheran Church (AELC). Worship services are held each week on Sunday morning with Sunday School either before or after service, Bible Studies are held monthly, Young Adults & Youth (YAY) occur regularly, and Men’s Fellowship gathers once a month. History of St Johns Aubigny
In December 1885, land was offered for sale in the new town of Aubigny. Only two pieces of land were sold at first. One was bought by the Lutheran church, and the other by the Catholic church. St Johns Lutheran Church first opened its doors in 1886. Later that year, it became an independent Lutheran congregation. In 1909, St Johns joined the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Australia (ELSA), later known as the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Australia (ELCA).
Later, on the 22nd of September, 1929, a bigger church building was finished, which still stands to this day. The original 1886 church building then became the church hall. This building was later removed and a larger hall was built.
In 1966, St Johns Aubigny became a member of the Lutheran Church of Australia (LCA) when the ELCA and the UELCA merged. Unfortunately, doctrinal issues (what Scripture teaches) and practical issues (how the beliefs of Scripture are applied) arose within the LCA, and after the LCA changed its official teaching regarding numerous doctrines of the Christian faith, the congregation of St Johns Aubigny would not tolerate these abuses of Scripture.
As a result of false teaching, and the obstinate refusal of the LCA to hear the concerns on members and congregations within the church body, St Johns Aubigny left the LCA in 1992 and called on a number of other congregations, both congregations still within the LCA and congregations who had left the LCA over these same concerns, to both form and join the Australian Evangelical Lutheran Church (AELC). Accordingly, the Australian Evangelical Lutheran Church was formed in 1992, officially being established in 1993, by several pastors and congregations. Pastor Clarence Priebennow, the pastor of St Johns Aubigny at this time, was a key figure in establishing the AELC so that confessional Lutherans in Australia could continue, and the Word of God be purely preached and the Sacraments correctly administered.
