Who knows what a superhero does? The most important thing a superhero does is help people who are in danger. Superheroes conquer evil. That means they don’t let bad people hurt anyone. Do you have a favourite superhero?
I want to tell you about my favourite superhero. Actually, He’s not a superhero at all. He’s not some made-up superhero, but is real, not a character from comic books or TV or movies. He’s the Son of God Himself, Jesus Christ! From the Bible, we learn how Jesus conquered evil and saves us from danger. We have an enemy, the devil, who’s a real-life bad guy. He tries to keep us away from Jesus. We’re also in danger because of our sin. Sin is when we disobey God, like when we tell lies, don’t listen to our parents or teachers, fight with our friends or brothers and sisters, and all the things that get us into trouble. That’s not what God wants. Our sin puts us in danger because we deserve God’s punishment. And because there’s sin in the world, there are dangers all around us. But we don’t have to worry because Jesus conquered evil! Jesus died on the cross to take the punishment Himself for all our sins. And Jesus is more powerful than death, so He rose again and promises that we shall live with Him safely in heaven forever. Because Jesus is alive, the devil can never hurt us.
Jesus is our hero because He conquered evil for us. Even more than that, the Bible tells us that everyone who loves Jesus is a conqueror too. Romans 8 says, “We [that means you and me] are more than conquerors through [Jesus] who loved us” (v 37). Whenever bad things happen, when others treat us badly, or the devil tempts us to sin, we can conquer all that evil because we belong to Jesus. The Bible tells us that nothing can take us away from Jesus and that He will never stop loving us and helping us. Jesus is always working for us, so that even when there’s evil, He works good for us. We conquer evil by trusting in Jesus.
Dear Jesus, thank You for conquering sin and death for me. In my baptism, You have made me Your own, have forgiven me all my sins, and given me everything I need to believe and trust in You. Amen.
