Look at the picture. What kind of bird is that? Right. It’s an eagle. Eagles are big birds! How high do you suppose eagles fly? Right! They fly way up there! Wouldn’t it be fun to fly way up high in the sky? Imagine how far you could see! And dangerous things down here wouldn’t bother you. Are there times when you’re scared or in trouble and wish you could fly away? Probably so for all of us.
In our First Reading today, God’s people, the children of Israel, have just come out of Egypt, where they were slaves. The Egyptians had been cruel to them. They made them work hard and beat them if they didn’t work hard enough. I bet there were many times when the children of Israel wished they could fly away from the Egyptians, fly way up high like an eagle.
Well, by now, God has brought them out of Egypt. He’s set them free, so they aren’t slaves, and nobody beats them. God says it’s as if He had carried His people on wings like an eagle, lifting them high into the sky so they could fly away from the Egyptians. Actually, He’d brought them out of Egypt by walking on the ground through the Red Sea, but you get the idea. God took them away from harm.
That’s what He does for us too. When we’re in danger, God protects us. When we’re in trouble or scared, He saves us from our troubles. He doesn’t literally lift us up to fly away, but He does protect and save us in whatever way is best. He gives us our mums and dads to protect us from scary things. And He enables our parents to love us, hug us, and forgive us when we’ve gotten ourselves into trouble.
Do you know how God does that? I’ll explain. Even when eagles aren’t flying, they’re safe up high because they build their nests way up in trees. God also saves you from trouble and scary things by a tree, because they used a tree to get wood to make the cross on which Jesus died. And when Jesus died on that cross from that tree, He took away our sins. Sin is why we get ourselves into trouble and why other troubles happen to us. But when those sins are taken away, we have God’s promise: He’ll always save us, lifting us up on eagles’ wings to fly away. And someday, we’ll soar away from all troubles. Where? That’s right. To heaven.
Thank You, God, for taking care of me. I know that all my troubles will soon disappear when I remember that in heaven I shall be with You one day! Amen.
